We weren’t a typical start-up; there were three of us, with many years of experience in editing, publishing and selling magazines, and we were buying The Simple Things as a struggling but existing business from a big publisher. But that’s exactly why we needed a lawyer, someone who knew what we didn’t and how to protect us from being pushed around by their big legal team. We chose Tall & Co as they were a start-up enterprise too and seemed more in touch with the reality (and the tight budget) of a new business. Jo helped us through a minefield of clauses that ensured a smoother transition – we had no idea just how much time, effort and legal wording it takes to extract a magazine from a big publishing company.
It was worth it though as with the deal done we were able to focus on reinvesting in and improving the magazine. This is paying off, as we are selling more on the newsstand and subscriptions are growing too. Jo continues to advise us as and when we need help.
